IoT Platforms – Platform as a Service (PaaS) – SAP

Companies with Platform as a Service (e.g. PaaS – SAP) are tapping into a real economy of scale. The benefit of economies of scale doesn’t simply stop at getting the same thing for less money. What you actually end up with is something better, for less money.

SAP is an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software company which develops and offers to their customers a powerful PaaS call SAP Hana Cloud. Using this platform, they developed the SAP Hana Cloud Platform of the Internet of Things (IoT). This post will explain what that is.

What is the SAP HANA Cloud Platform for the IoT?

It is a service which enables companies to go from sensor to action. In addition, provides the ability to quickly develop, deploy, and manage real-time IoT, machine-to-machine (M2M) and remote data synch applications.

Companies with the SAP IoT PaaS can:

  • onboard and manage connected remote devices
  • get real-time predictive analysis to improve intelligence
  • decision-making at the edge of the network, and
  • optimize business processes

at the core of your business.

SAP provides two type of services:

1. SAP HANA Cloud Platform – Internet of Things Service (IoTS)

This service includes:

  • Develop, Customize and Operate IoT Business Apps in the Cloud

SAP HANA Cloud Platform – IoTS helps customers connect the core of their business to the devices or machines connected to the network, gain operational efficiencies, and drive the creation of new revenue models, products and services.

  • Remote Device Management Services (RDMS)

Manage the device lifecycle from onboarding to decommissioning, devices and data modeling. In addition, RDMS receives device information, configures devices remotely, and sends data to devices.

  • Communicate Freely

Message management services supports various communication protocols and messaging formats for sending, receiving, and storing IoT data in the persistence layer (read / write data to a database) of SAP HANA Cloud Platform.

  • Manage Remotely

Easily apply and incorporate remote device management and message management into your applications through APIs (Application Programming Interfaces).

 2. SAP HANA Cloud Platform – Remote Data Sync Service (RDSS)

This service includes:

  • Synchronize Structured Data Between the Edge and the Cloud

SAP HANA Cloud Platform – RDSS provides bi-directional synchronization of complex structured data between many remote databases at the edge component and SAP HANA cloud databases.

  • Create Occasionally-Connected Applications at the Edge

There are still many applications that must work with intermittent connectivity. These include applications that are not suitable or economical to have a connection, or, applications that must continue to operate in the face of unexpected network failures.

SAP HANA Cloud Platform – RDSS allows you to create applications that use a local database, and, then synchronizes with the cloud when a connection is available.

  • Improve Edge Application User Experience

SAP HANA Cloud Platform – RDSS allows you to create remote applications that store and share large amounts of data between the application and the cloud.

This can significantly reduce latency for data rich applications and provide a more responsive user experience for remote applications.

  • Synchronize Thousands of Remote Databases with a Single Cloud Database

A single cloud database may have hundreds of thousands of data collection and action endpoints that operate in the real-world over sometimes unreliable networks.

SAP HANA Cloud Platform – RDSS provides a way to connect all of these remote applications together.

Conclusion

When companies build and run on a PaaS, they use technology that has been developed and refined in response to the needs of thousands of customers. And that is what SAP has done and the reason why their platform is reliable.
